IN SPITE OF… (a fragment)

As a matter of questioning the reality we are living in the city of Monterrey, which has been kidnapped by the drug war violence. This is ourway to stand up against violence, questioning many feelings as strong as fear in a poetic action that involves dance, performance, singing, closed circuit video, live cinema and projections.

IN SPITE OF… a fragment,  has been presented at the Theater of the Cultural Institute of México in San Antonio, and the Little Carver Theater in San Antonio, Texas as part of the special collaboration and invitation with Seme Jatib from Proyectos en Movimiento dance company.

It also qualified and was presented as part of the national contemporary dance festival XXVII EMDC (Encuentro Metropolitano de Danza Conetmporánea) at the Gran Sala del Teatro de la Ciudad in Monterrey, México.

During summer we had 3 presentations in the Teatro del Centro de las Artes, Monterrey, as part of MOMENTS_ Contemporary Dance & Live Cinema.  It developted through 3 acts or AV performances. For which a specific projection design was developt in situ according to each of the 3 performances and individual concepts to convey different emotions.

VjThai (Roxana T. Barraza) with Media Selectah´s collaboration, worked with dancer/singer artist Radha Murillo to developt MOMENTS a multidisciplinary performance involving dance, singing, realtime experimental video realization, video projection design, videomapping, electronic & electroacustic music, with different levels of interaction, to convey emotions and ideas about the present moment and a poetic protest against violence.

En qué frecuencia estamos sintonizados?

S.O.S es la señal de socorro más utilizada del siglo XX, que debido a su sencillez es menos difícil que se pierda o se malinterprete.

Este un proyecto que explora la saturación de contenidos electrónicos a los que somos expuestos día a día, en este mundo “hiperconectado” y lo contrasta con las señales o los símbolos provenientes de diferentes culturas que nos reconectan con la naturaleza. Invita a hacer una reflexión acerca de los enlaces que tenemos que fortalecer como humanos más allá de la tecnología.

S.O.S Live Cinema hace una analogía entre el viaje en una carretera, las señales de socorro que se encuentran en el camino y los paisajes que se atraviesan; con el viaje que es la vida misma y cómo las diferentes señales que percibimos nos van llevando hacia nuevos caminos y experiencias.

La inspiración de este proyecto nace de los viajes constantes por carretera entre la ciudad industrial de Monterrey y el pueblo mágico de Real de Catorce, ambos lugares en México, pero con grandes diferencias geográficas y culturales.

S.O.S Save Our Souls toma la forma de un performance Audiovisual en tiempo real creado momento a momento explorando diferentes técnicas que fusionan el video contemporáneo, la intervención multimedia y la música electrónica.

Se ha presentado en Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, MARCO / Festival Internacional de Artes Electrónicas MEDIARTE – Alianza Francesa y Conarte, Centro de las Artes, Monterrey / Live Performer´s Meeting LPMX, Centro Nacional de las Artes CENART, México D.F. Y ha aparecido en la galería en línea de The Creators Project (Vice / Intel).

Do we look for signs or do they find us?

Signs are in everything that is alive, everywhere.

But what signs do we see? What signals do we receive?

Are we in tune?

S.O.S Live Cinema is a multimedia art project that consists in creating an audiovisual piece in situ through the  realtime improvisation of music and visuals that interact in different ways, and suddenly create an AV conversation between ideas and feelings.

S.O.S. is divided in 4 sessions, in which VjThai explores different experimental approaches to realtime videocreation through feestyle. Using videoclips or video loops made with different processes, as the basic elements for the live visual composition.

Many feelings and ideas are evoked in a sinesthetic language that alouds for each individual to have a different experience, and therefore a different interpretation, making their own connections, opening a space/time for contemplation.

VjThai creates live video performance from her video recordings, 2D animations, photographs, edits, investigations, loops, found footage and samplings.

 Vj Thai es Roxana Barraza, artista mediática y activista cultural, de nacionalidad Salvadoreña / Española pero residente en Monterrey, México, nació en Bangkok Tailandia. Su trabajo explora la fusión del video contemporáneo con instalaciones plásticas, la música, la danza y el performance. Profundiza en la yuxtaposición de la naturaleza y la tecnología con una visión interdisciplinaria, que surge de la improvisación y composición de video en tiempo real y el cine experimental. Utiliza las técnicas de Vj , Hip Hop, Video Mapping y Live Cinema en el performance audiovisual. Miembro y cofundadora de algunos de los colectivos más propositivos en México como Media Selectah, Aramara Performance , Sistema Local, y Colectivo Coral

Ha participado en diversos festivales de Arte y Tecnología , recientemente en Live Performers Meeting MEX 2013, Centro Nacional de las Artes CENART – México D.F. (MX),   Festival Internacional Santa Lucía 2013 Monterrey, y en el Festival Nacional de Hip Hop Cultura Urbana en Ciudad Universitaria en el Teatro Covarrubias de la UNAM, 2014 México D.F. Vj Thai is Roxana Barraza, media artist and cultural activist, with Salvadorean / Spanish nationality but lives in Monterrey, México, was born in Bangkok, Thailand. Her work explores the fusion of contemporary video with art installations, music, dance and performance. Investigates the yuxtaposition of nature and technology with an interdisciplinary vision, through improvisation and composition of realtime video and experimental cinema. El caos digital vs la armonía del mundo natural.

El arte como yo lo vivo de manera autodidácta, me permite explorar la imagen en movimiento como medio de expresión sin ningún límite o regla. En 1999 compré mi primer aparato en formato análogo Hi8 durante un viaje a Nueva York, y desde entonces utilizo una cámara de video para digerir el mundo que me rodea.

Mi estilo es libre. Mi visión interdisciplinaria. En general en mis proyectos exploro las relaciones entre el ser humano, la tecnología, la naturaleza y la espiritualidad. Es una búsqueda constante por digerir el exceso de imágenes comerciales a las que estamos expuestos. Transformo espacios con la intervención de VIDEO (luz, sonido e imágenes) utilizando distintas técnicas de proyección para crear ambientes inmersivos que invitan a la introspección. Busco los momentos de sincronía audiovisual como experiencia que permiten la percepción más allá de los sentidos.

Mi experimentación con el video surge de la composición de video en tiempo real basada en el “LOOP”. Con técnicas del cine experimental, el videoarte, el performance, hasta la música electrónica ó el Hip Hop, aplicadas al video contemporáneo. Utilizo fragmentos de videos como materia prima, principalmente grabaciones mías, pero también foundfootage, “sámpleos”, apropiaciones, grabaciones, fotografías, animaciones, sonidos, etc.

Hago uso del montaje en vivo, la improvisación, el juego, el error, y las nuevas tecnologías para intervenir el video a nivel narrativo, estético y conceptual con variaciones de ritmo, repetición y dimensión creando constantes reinterpretaciones, yuxtaposiciones y permutaciones.

Es en este proceso de transformación no lineal, en donde encuentro una catarsis al deconstruir, recontextualizar y resignificar el video sin una búsqueda narrativa, y dotarlo de nuevos significados y nuevas formas al interactuar con la música, las proyecciones, el espacio y la gente.

Live Performance for me has the quality of ever changing its form, it depends on the music, the artist, the place, the projections, and the public, and the combination of them always give different results.

This video is the only memory of that Audio Visual perfect moment of creation of live videoart through improvisation and combinations of videoclips of my creation, that seem to fit perfectly with the music around many issues that were awakening in my mind through various years of the exploration of video without any boundaries.

Using my video recordings of nature, vintage documentaries on the human body, refractions and reflections and live camera, to try to create this connections on all levels from a micro and macro dimensions, levels of meaning in a mixture of science and transcendence.

I had been working with Sistema Local (SLSS) crew and Dj Yesca for a long time through different multimedia projects and happenings. As they explored into the deepest hard to find vinyl records for an eclectic sound, Yesca and I explored the visual side of music through design and moving image. It all happened so natural that with them having hours of spinning records,  I had hours of live visualizations, and as the djs changed, I kept on going and had to improvised through different styles without ever knowing what could sound next.

This performance had place in ZONA LOUNGE, as part of the FORUM activities in the city of Monterrey. The visuals were seen by a few in 8 proyections of 3×4 meters distributed around the place. It is an industrial warehouse where there use to be a fabric of steel, and now there is a park area called Parque Fundidora.The place was transformed for this FORUM event, and it existed only 4 months, 2007.
